AFPM ’18: Formosa moving ahead with Louisiana petrochemical project

SAN ANTONIO (ICIS)–FG LA LLC, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC), is currently in the process of permitting for phase 1 of its planned petrochemical complex in St. James Parish, Louisiana, company representatives told ICIS on the sidelines of this year’s International Petrochemical Conference (IPC).

FG LA LLC is independent of Formosa Plastics Corporation (FPC), which has a longstanding footprint in the US. FG LA LLC’s project will be the first US investment for FPCC.

Phase 1 of the complex will include a 1.2m tonne/year cracker, a 600,000 tonne/year propane dehydrogenation (PDH) unit, a 600,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant, a 400,000 tonne/year high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant, a 400,000 tonne/year linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) plant and a 900,000 tonne/year ethylene glycol (EG) unit.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed in 2022.

The company is also planning to build additional capacity at the site as part of phase 2 of the project, which is anticipated to start-up in 2027. Phase 2 will include a 1.2m tonne/year cracker, a 400,000 tonne/year HDPE plant, a 400,000 tonne/year LLDPE plant and a 900,000 tonne/year EG plant.

Hosted by the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), the IPC takes place on 25-27 March in San Antonio, Texas.
