HOUSTON (ICIS)–US-listed chemical stocks posted their second large loss on Monday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 2.11%.

The index closed at 23,592.98, down by 507.53 points. On Friday, it fell by 2.02%.

The S&P 500 closed at 2,545.94, down by 54.01 points or 2.08%.

The S&P and Dow Jones are in corrections.

The Russell 2000 index, which follows smaller companies, closed down by more than 20% from its previous high, putting it in a bear market.

The Dow Jones US Chemicals Index closed at 555.75, down 9.36 points or 1.66%. It has fallen deeper into a bear market.

The S&P 500 Chemicals Industry Index is less than a point away from a bear market.

Several factors are weighing on the stock market. Major economies outside of the US continue to slow. Trade disputes fester. Investors are worried about rising interest rates, with the Federal Reserve expected to increase them once more this week. The financial media is raising concerns about yield curve inversions, which could presage future downturns.

Even in the US, an increasing number of signs point to a slowing economy.

The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) for December was 56, the lowest reading since May 2015.

The index is yet another indicator of the slowing US housing market. Likewise, US automobile sales are also down.

Another index measuring general business in New York state fell by 12 points to 10.9. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, one of the regional banks of the US Federal Reserve, calculates the index from its monthly Empire State Manufacturing Survey.

For chemicals, nearly every US-listed company followed by ICIS fell, with several declines exceeding 2%.
