LONDON (ICIS)–The network connection between the projected HH2E renewable hydrogen production site in Lubmin and the European gas connection EUGAL (lines 1 and 2) was agreed by transmission system operator Gascade and HH2E on 10 January, the Gascade communicated via press release.
The HH2E renewable hydrogen production site in Lubmin, located on the German Baltic Sea coast in the northeast of the country, is currently under construction and will take renewable electricity from both offshore and onshore wind turbines.
The site in Lubmin will begin hydrogen production of 6,000 tonnes/year in 2025 with 50MW of alkaline electrolyser capacity, before increasing to 500MW capacity and 60,000 tonnes/year by 2030.
According to Gascade, capacities at such pipelines are going to be used as soon as they are bookable. These connections are part of the project “Flow – making hydrogen happen” which was classed as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission late in 2023.
This PCI, which is also part of the draft German hydrogen core grid, would extend from Lubmin to the southwest of the country.
The network of this project consists of the following:
- 1,100 kilometres of pipelines
- Pipeline conversion from gas to start from as early as 2025
- Interconnection with other large projects in the country such as ‘MosaHYc’, ‘HyPipe Bavaria’
- Cross-border exchange is expected with planned extensions to Austria, Switzerland, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark
