Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Spot FOB (free on board) Korea prices rose by $50/tonne from mid-August to $1,322/tonne in early September. Bullish factors fuelling the price uptrend included firmer crude futures and rising downstream styrene monomer (SM) numbers.
However, the sharp gains in FOB Korea prices led to subdued Chinese buying activity for imports and the closure of the Asia-US arbitrage window. Falling US benzene prices added to the downward pressure on Asian markets as well. Prices subsequently started softening going into October and were at $1,210/tonne FOB Korea on 22 October.
With spot FOB Korea prices hovering in the low $1,200s/tonne, Chinese importers entered the market to restock on benzene as China’s domestic prices were deemed higher than South Korea’s export prices. Declining inventories at the Chinese ports also prompted end-users to buy November-shipment imports. In east China, inventories fell to below 55,000 tonnes in end-October and continued falling to 40,000 tonnes in mid-November.
However, despite facing dwindling inventories, Chinese importers stopped their discussions for imports from end-October, when FOB Korea prices rebounded to the mid-$1,200s/tonne on the back of higher US and European numbers. Prices in overseas markets rose after local production facilities suffered outages.
