Updated to Q1 2016
Asia benzene prices were on a general uptrend in the first quarter, trending along with energy prices while hinging on China import demand for support as the US arbitrage closes.
Spot FOB Korea benzene prices were at $595/tonne FOB Korea in early January and peaked at $673.50/tonne in early March, but softened to $631.50/tonne by the end of March.
China’s benzene imports more than doubled to 110,564 tonnes in February on the back of strong demand from downstream sectors ahead of the domestic manufacturing season, while China was facing tight domestic supply due to the shutdown of Ningbo Zhongjin’s plant.
March arrivals to China were estimated by market players to be higher than February's, with the import window staying largely opened in February, but demand faded into March because of cautious buying from the Chinese for April and May cargoes. Trading sentiments in Asia were weaker on the back of ample inventories in China. Overall trading sentiments in Asia were weighed down by lack of Chinese demand and a close arbitrage to the US but lowered supply availability outside of China due to turnarounds in Korea during March and April kept prices afloat.
