Updated to Q3 2014
Q3 started off with high drama for the European bisphenol A (BPA) industry, with the reintroduction of an import tariff at 5.5% from 1 July. The tariff applied to imports from most destinations including Russia, China and Taiwan but excludes South Korea. At the same time, prices in China started rising rapidly through the quarter, due to tight availability from some shutdowns. This attracted Korean product away from Europe.
The result was a slowdown in imports through the quarter, leading to more buyers turning to European product. European product traditionally carries a price premium to imports. September also saw maintenance outages both at Momentive’s Pernis Holland facility and at Ufaorgsintez’s plant in Ufa, Russia, making the market even tighter. This led European producers to increase their prices further. Finally, higher benzene prices increased the value of formula-based contracts through the start of the quarter.
The spot price started the quarter at an average of €1,400/tonne FD NWE, and ended September at 1,530/tonne. Similarly free-negotiated contracts rose from €1,510-1,525/tonne at the end of June to €1,545-1,570/tonne FD NWE.
