Updated to Q4 2014
The US melamine market saw prices rise an average of 7 cents/lb ($154/tonne) during the fourth quarter amid an anti-dumping petition seeking protection for a domestic producer against cheaper imports from China and Trinidad.
Many market participants say that even the threat of anti-dumping duties will likely put upward pressure on melamine prices for the first quarter of 2015.
Domestic contract and market prices rose on higher costs for ammonia, the feedstock used by the US’s only domestic melamine producer.
US melamine exports have been growing faster than imports. Exports of 28,720 tonnes through October are up 21% for 2014, and imports of 32,464 tonnes are up 5%, according to figures provided by the US International Trade Commission.
Melamine plants in China and Trinidad use natural gas as a feedstock and imports from producers in those countries are down on natural gas distribution problems in Trinidad and a diversion of natural gas for home heating in China during the cold months.
