Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Updated to Q2 2017
Prices in the US acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) freely negotiated contract market began the second quarter under pressure due to sharp increases in March and cheaper priced imports. As a result, producers began offering discounts to larger buyers.
Asian ABS prices had been under pressure since February. However, a few US producers separately raised prices further in April for certain ABS grades. Producers separately kept prices unchanged in May, but largely kept quiet about it. That was followed by price decreases of as much as 8 cents/lb in June for general purpose grades.
Prices for Asian imports also fell in June. Domestic price increases in March and April were in response to sharply higher feedstock prices, especially styrene and butadiene.
The US market was described as balanced in May, and was expected to stay that way through June. May demand was strong, and June was also expected to be the same. Historically, July is a soft demand month.
