Updated to Q2 2018
European benzene availability for the majority of Q2 was long, with global inventories high; although supply for prompt delivery temporarily tightened on production disruption towards the end of the quarter. Lacklustre demand in Europe and China contributed to the oversupply situation, while imports from Turkey, India and the Middle East entered Europe as producers in those regions sought to find outlets for excess supply. The length also prevented prices from ticking up, despite strength in the energy and crude markets.
European benzene demand in Q2 picked up versus Q1, as seasonal activity in the derivative markets improved during the warmer months. However, demand was not particularly strong as performances in the end-use sectors was somewhat disappointing on sluggish macroeconomics. Consumption from key downstream product styrene was healthier than in Q1 as producers in that sector successfully restarted after a busy maintenance period.
The European benzene report is a weekly report that’s published every Friday and is a mixture of spot numbers, so we look at the current month as well as the forward month. We also report the monthly contract price.
It’s a key chemical market that goes into different applications. We speak to buyers, sellers, traders everyone that’s involved really, to get a complete picture of what’s happening in the market.
But it’s not just prices, we also try and gauge sentiment and what’s pulling the market one way or another at any given time. So it could be volatility with crude prices or even the wider economic factors that are happening at the time.
Also we have to look at the different regions, because it’s very much a global market, so we try and see if the material is being pulled in one region or its leaving another.
If you require a daily benzene price we also produce a daily Aromatics report for Europe which provides you with in-depth pricing information, news and analysis, including a view of benzene prices to keep you informed of the factors and developments affecting the European marketplace on a day-to-day basis.
