Updated to Q1 2018
Unconstrained production, as well as a steady flow of imports, resulted in ample supply during the whole quarter, although material felt a bit tighter in certain cases where prompt needs had to be covered. Reduced consumption from the downstream styrene side due to the Q1 turnaround season meant that more benzene was available, which led to a well-balanced to slightly long market at the end of the quarter.
The start of the quarter saw stable volumes, but consumption started dropping from February onwards once several plants in both Europe and the US went offline for planned maintenance which would last a few weeks. Off-take from the other key outlets such as phenol was satisfactory, although MDI demand was slightly impacted towards the end of February due to severe cold weather in several parts of the region.
The European benzene report is a weekly report that’s published every Friday and is a mixture of spot numbers, so we look at the current month as well as the forward month. We also report the monthly contract price.
It’s a key chemical market that goes into different applications. We speak to buyers, sellers, traders everyone that’s involved really, to get a complete picture of what’s happening in the market.
But it’s not just prices, we also try and gauge sentiment and what’s pulling the market one way or another at any given time. So it could be volatility with crude prices or even the wider economic factors that are happening at the time.
Also we have to look at the different regions, because it’s very much a global market, so we try and see if the material is being pulled in one region or its leaving another.
If you require a daily benzene price we also produce a daily Aromatics report for Europe which provides you with in-depth pricing information, news and analysis, including a view of benzene prices to keep you informed of the factors and developments affecting the European marketplace on a day-to-day basis.
