Updated to Q4 2017
In Q4 2017, supply from Chinese producers that regularly export was largely constant. Towards the later part of Q4 2017, a major Chinese producer with a butyl acetate(butac)/ethyl acetate (etac) swing plant, however, has reduced its butac output as etac prices spiked and commanded a higher margin. Meanwhile, southeast Asian producers were facing production woes. A southeast Asian producer's operation rates at its butac/etac swing plant was lower than usual since September 2017 due to upstream plant issues. Supply from a separate southeast Asian producer was also short from previous upstream plant issues in November 2017.
In Q4 2017, demand started healthy in China amid the traditional peak season, but gradually slowed as winter approached. Demand for the downstream paint and coating sectors is typically lacklustre during winter. In southeast Asia, as the supply for butac was not excessive, demand was largely stable for the solvent.
