Significant increases in the feedstock benzene contract price took caprolactam (capro) prices to higher levels both in January and February with demand holding strong and availability limited.
European prices were lower compared with Asia and the US, and local suppliers exported volumes to these regions in February because they were either short or tight of material.
This trend continued well into March, creating even greater availability problems in Europe. According to some sources, it is a situation that could continue until the end of the second quarter.
Despite a drop in the feedstock benzene contract price in March, capro prices rose further, mainly driven by the supply/demand balance of the market.
Although the outlook for the market looks positive overall, there are some concerns about the high levels of pricing. Business has been very healthy for the first quarter of the year, but the latest increases could be a bubble about to burst, according to buyers.
