Updated to Q2 2017
The caprolactam (capro) market in Europe suffered from imbalanced conditions due to short supply and strong demand through most of the second quarter. Strong demand, planned turnarounds and a force majeure on both of Fibrant’s capro plants in Geleen, Netherlands, all contributed to availability issues that heavily influenced price movements in the Q2.
Q2 is typically the peak demand season for the capro and downstream nylon 6 markets. Capro contracts increased by in April amid the imbalanced supply and demand dynamic and volatility in the feedstock benzene contract reference price. The market started to rebalance at the end of the quarter as turnarounds ended and falling prices in Asia saw European producers focusing on the domestic market rather than exporting material. However, some residual tightness persisted.
Demand began to ease towards the end of the quarter. The summer season is traditionally quieter than spring in the downstream nylon market, which typically sees demand for capro soften. Meanwhile, Asian capro imports, which were booked in previous months at competitive prices during the arbitrage window, started to arrive in Europe, although not in significant volumes.
