Updated to Q2 2018
US ethylene supply remained ample in the second quarter, as production increased following the start-up of a 1.5m tonne/year cracker which had started in March. Supply became slightly more balanced in the second half of the quarter as production weakened slightly due to turnarounds for several crackers and the idling of a small cracker amid historic low ethylene prices. However, there were few unplanned outages and supply remains lengthy compared to previous quarters.
US ethylene demand strengthened in the second quarter as new downstream polyethylene (PE) continued to ramp up. Although most new PE capacity had started up in late 2017, several had faced logistical, certification or specification issues which delayed the full operation of the units. PE is the largest consumer of US ethylene. Demand for US ethylene exports remains limited due to export capacity. The US has only one small export terminal for ethylene.
The US ethylene report offers an assessment of the spot process and contract quotes that reflects the benchmark price for the monomer in the US market.
We keep our subscribers updated on anything that could potentially move the market, such as outages, start-ups, or planned maintenance.
Additionally, the report includes feedstock prices and monthly production data. The ethylene report from the US has a wealth of information for traders, producers and buyers. Anyone buying or selling any chemical made from ethylene can benefit greatly from the report.

ICIS pricing plant performance data (PPD) reports track activities at ethylene plants and crude oil refineries globally. These monthly reports* record total or nameplate capacity, operating rates as well as shutdowns and other developments at individual production facilities. The reports are available in a paper wallchart format or are downloadable from the ICIS pricing website as a CSV or excel file.
Data for the report month is collected at the end of the previous month. Therefore information published is an estimate of plant activity in the report month. This may vary from actual operations at the facility due to subsequent unscheduled shutdowns or alterations in production plans. Information is collected through direct contact with the plant operator. If that is not possible data is sourced from third parties with detailed industry knowledge.
