Updated to Q4 2016
The US hydrochloric acid market saw the first price increase in 22 months in October as drilling activity for oil and natural gas began to pick up and plant outages slimmed supply.
Subsequent price initiatives have failed to gain traction. But the October increase provided evidence that the market was again moving.
Prices peaked at the end of 2014 when falling crude oil futures slowed drilling activity. HCl is used in the hydraulic fracturing process to dissolve limestone and clean out bore holes.
As oil drilling activity slowed to a crawl, HCl prices steadily lowered over the course of a year to near a penny a pound.
But as oil prices began to stabilize near $50/bbl in late May, the number of rigs drilling in US oil patches grew from 400 to above 600 from May to early December. But that is still down from 1,931 peak of late 2014.
Demand for steel pickling, food processing and chemical production has remained fairly steady during the quarter.
