Updated to Q3 2017
The hydrochloric acid market is structurally long, and European supply levels have been balanced to long over the third-quarter. Supply was said to be more balanced in July, due to healthy demand and a number of minor turnarounds in the related markets. Some parts of northwest Europe were said to be more heavily supplied that others, for example surplus volumes were noted in Germany, due to the production rates at plants in that region. In the UK and Spain supply was steady during the third-quarter. As the third-quarter ended, supply was balanced to long, depending on region.
Healthy demand was noted by producers in July. Overall, demand remained steady during the quarter. Although some parts of Europe became more balanced, the steady demand was not enough to absorb the additional supply on the market. However, demand had increased in comparison to the second-quarter. Some sources found the market had become tighter in some parts of northwest Europe towards the end of the quarter. Production problems were heard to have caused disruption at one large European producer, though this was unconfirmed.

Supply of hydrochloric acid in the US was constrained by plant maintenances and outages during the third quarter, leading to steep increases in prices.
Demand is expected to continue to grow from rising drilling activity for oil and natural gas in the US where HCl is used in the hydraulic fracturing process.
