Updated to Q2 2017
The majority of second-quarter US melamine supply contracts were agreed at a rollover from the first quarter. However, some price increases of 1-2 cents/lb were also seen.
Cornerstone Chemical, the only melamine producer in the US, concluded second-quarter contracts within the range of a rollover to an increase of 2 cents/lb, sources said.
Suppliers of offshore material agreed to price rollovers for their second-quarter contracts, market sources said.
This followed price increases in the first quarter by offshore suppliers of up to 3 cents/lb. Price hikes from European suppliers were the result of tight supply in Europe following production issues in China.
The result was heavy exports from Europe to cover customers in various countries that are supplied by China.
The second quarter is typically the highest demand quarter of the year. However, the first quarter was stronger than normal, with healthy volumes seen.
Melamine imports and exports were up by 4% and down by 37%, respectively, in April year on year.
Negotiations began in June for third quarter contracts, but were not finalised prior to July.
