US oxo-alcohols contractual supply was largely adequate for customers during the third quarter, but supply constraints remained in place during most of the period, stemming partly from BASF’s plant outage in Ludwigshafen, Germany, in mid-October 2016. Sales control on 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) also remained in effect from Eastman Chemical as the quarter ended. A BASF plant in Pasadena, Texas, started up during the quarter, adding moderately to merchant-market supply. The quarter ended, however, as Hurricane Harvey struck the US Gulf coast in the first week of September.
US oxo-alcohols demand declined moderately from the peak US spring coatings season and continued mostly steady until Hurricane Harvey disrupted both chemical production and transportation logistics in the US Gulf coast region. Those factors curtailed supply to customers, and had begun to push fourth-quarter pricing higher. While seasonal demand would typically have continued to weaken, it was somewhat bolstered by storm-related supply limits and unexpectedly steady buying interest for late summer/early fall, sellers said.
The weekly US oxo-alcohols report covers contract and spot prices for normal butanol (NBA), isobutanol (IBA), 2 ethyl hexanol (2-EH) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP).
The report provides an overview of markets for solvents and plasticisers that are the key drivers for oxo-alcohols.
