As the third quarter got underway phenol supply in Europe was meeting demand, with the market well balanced. Availability remains adequate in August, despite a planned turnaround carried out by one producer and another producer’s separately planned stoppage. However, two further planned turnarounds separately carried out during September began to tighten the market, with a force majeure declaration in the closing days of the quarter exacerbating the growing tightness.
Although the summer holiday period led to pockets of weaker demand in August, buyers planning ahead for the turnarounds set for September helped to underpin phenol demand. Although separately planned turnarounds in September led to some suppliers seeing higher demand, as buyers looked to find alternative sources, underlying demand was stable in the closing weeks of the quarter, with a flurry of enquiries generated by a force majeure declaration as the quarter ended.
The ICIS weekly phenol report is the industry benchmark price. It is widely used in contracts between buyers, sellers and traders.
The main quote is free delivered (FD) northwest Europe (NWE), with additional quotes offering details of free on board (FOB) Rotterdam, and spot Rotterdam prices.
In addition, the ICIS phenol Europe report gives the rouble-denominated Russian value. This trusted quote is widely used throughout the phenolic chain.
