Sentiment regarding the Europe propylene oxide (PO) formula contract price was mixed during the second quarter, because of fluctuations in the upstream propylene contract price.
April PO contract prices rose by €12/tonne, to €1,361-1,479/tonne FD (free delivered) northwest Europe (NWE), on the back of higher propylene contract costs. PO formula contracts typically change in line with 80% of the propylene contract price movement.
In May, PO formula contract prices rolled over, in line with the stability in the propylene price. Formula contract prices softened in June because of lower propylene contract costs.
While the majority of contract business is formula-related and freely negotiated/spot PO business is structurally limited, there was a flurry of additional demand during April and May and spot prices were said to be at a sizeable premium over the contract level in certain cases.
The firmer spot sentiment was driven by tight supply, resulting from LyondellBasell’s lengthy plant turnaround at its Botlek site in the Netherlands, and strong performance in the downstream polyurethanes and butanediol (BDO) sectors.
