Terephthalic acid: Market overview
Updated to Q2 2018
PTA operating rates are already running at generally high operating rates and are expected to continue so with sufficient demand support and current PX-PTA spreads are also encouraging PTA producers to continue running their plants at high operating rates.
An overall increase in PTA demand is expected. Downstream PET bottle chips enters its seasonal peak production period that should have some additional interest in PTA purchases. Stable production is expected for the downstream polyester fibre and yarn sector should also continue to support the demand for PTA. There are upcoming plans for the starting up of new downstream PET and polyester plants in the quarter.
There are no planned PTA shutdowns announced for the second quarter, which is traditionally when the market sees peak demand from downstream PET bottlers. Spring is also when there is a draw from smaller applications, too, so the market could be balanced or snug
The second quarter usually sees a run on product as the peak season for PTA into the major PET bottling outlet sets in. Other smaller users of PTA have said they also expect higher demand during the second quarter. A weakness in the dominant Asian market during March may lead to more European buyers seeking material elsewhere, depending on price competitiveness.
Supply of US PTA is expected to remain steady in the second quarter and balanced with demand. Higher seasonal demand typically starts in the second quarter, however, lower operating rates at downstream PET plants will impact the market this year.
Demand for US PTA will increase in the second quarter on higher seasonal use. In the US, however, lower operating rates at downstream PET plants will impact the market this year. Reduced PET production is not expected to return until after the second quarter.

Purified terephthalic acid Methodology
About Terephthalic acid
Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) occurs as a white, crystalline powder with a slightly acidic odour. PTA is a low-risk hazard to health but prolonged exposure should be avoided.
In addition, PTA dust can be explosive, and it reacts strongly with oxidants. The substance can irritate the eyes and skin.
Nearly all PTA is consumed in polyester production including polyester fibre, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle resin and polyester film.
Modern technologies produce purified terephthalic acid by the catalytic liquid phase oxidation of paraxylene (PX) in acetic acid, in the presence of air. The process uses manganese or cobalt acetate as a catalyst.
