Updated to Q2 2017
US vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) remained a captive precursor to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) during the first quarter of 2017, with prices moving lower in tandem with those of the derivative resin. US VCM lost $75/tonne during the quarter as softness in global markets for derivative PVC pushed values lower.
The US enjoyed greater VCM exports during the quarter as OxyChem’s joint venture with Mexichem sent more VCM from Oxy’s Ingleside, Texas, ethane cracker to Mexichem plants in Mexico and Colombia. US exports were up 18% through April with 447,209 tonnes shipped.
Most US merchant sales are through contract, with most US exported material sold to a producer of PVC with manufacturing operations in Mexico and South America.
