Updated to Q4 2018
Some key turnarounds were conducted in the US, European and Japanese melamine markets during the fourth quarter. US imports during the first 10 months of 2018 were up by 8.5% from the same period in 2017. The US has imported more melamine than it has exported since 2015. In addition to domestic supply from Cornerstone Chemical, which is the only domestic melamine producer, the US imported most of its supply from the Netherlands, Trinidad/Tobago and Germany.
US demand dropped in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter, but it was largely stable from the same quarter in 2017. The main reason that demand dips in the fourth quarter is that construction activity tapers off after the peak season in the third quarter. Exports shot higher during the first 10 months of 2018, rising by 79% from the same period in 2017. That, in turn, led to increased import volumes, with levels rising by 8.5% during the same timeframe, year on year. It should be noted that total exports in 2017 hit the lowest level in several years.
