A styrene facility in the Netherlands encountered unexpected production problems in December. The 500,000 tonne/year site encountered a process disruption and went down on 11 December because of an equipment issue. A restart was expected by the middle of January. Rhine river water levels picked up towards the end of the quarter, but logistics remained constrained.
Demand for styrene in Europe was very subdued in the fourth quarter. General macroeconomic malaise, and weaker sentiment in Asia, along with traditional de-stocking measures at year-end reduced overall consumption rates.
