Polybutadiene Overview Transcript
Polybutadiene rubber or PBR is polymerised butadiene. Butadiene is the main feedstock for PBT.
It is used mainly by the tyre makers in the production of tyres for the automotives industry.
The major PBR producers in Asia are based in Northeast Asia in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The major buyers are the tyre makers; they are based in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
It is a product that is traded in the spot market by traders as well as by suppliers.

Polybutadiene rubber: Market overview
Updated to Q3 2016
Spot prices of polybutadiene rubber (PBR) are expected to remain soft in the third quarter due to prevailing soft demand and ample supply amid an uncertain global market outlook.
Declining feedstock butadiene (BD) and soft natural rubber (NR) prices in Asia may also further dampen buying sentiment and weigh down PBR prices in the third quarter.
Chinese demand for PBR may start to wane in August due to the G20 Summit in Hangzhou city on 4-5 September.
This is because the Chinese government has issued a directive to factories and petrochemical plants in Ningbo and Shanghai to either cut operating rates or shut down in the run-up to the G20 Summit as part of its measures to improve air quality.
Ample supply may also dampen buying sentiment in India, with the expected start-up of a new 100,000 tonne/year PBR plant in Saudi Arabia in the third quarter.
The monsoon season from July to September in India is also expected to weigh on demand during this period as trading and manufacturing activities usually slow during the wet, rainy season period.

Butadiene Rubber Methodology
About Polybutadiene rubber
Polybutadiene butadiene rubber (PBR), sometimes called polybutadiene rubber (BR), is a polymerised butadiene. Butadiene is the main feedstock for BR. Its key properties include high elasticity, good wear resistance, along with good flexibility at variable temperatures – it is especially good for uses which require exposure to low temperatures.
The major use of BR is in tyres with a high proportion of the polymer produced going into treads and sidewalls. BR imparts excellent abrasion resistance (good tread wear), and low rolling resistance (good fuel economy) due to its low glass transition temperature.
Apart from tyre treads - belts, hoses, gaskets and other automobile parts are also made from polybutadiene because it stands up to cold temperatures better than other elastomers.
BR also has a major application as an impact modifier for polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin.
