Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
Polypropylene (PP) prices have moved largely in line with propylene monomer contracts in the past three months, falling from September through to November. By mid-November, however, market sentiment was that pricing had reached the bottom, and spot prices rallied modestly.
There is still a great deal of caution in the market and buyers and sellers are keeping a careful eye on stock levels as upstream pricing is so volatile. Buyers are sticking to their regular producers at present in a move to reach targeted volumes at the end of the year, and subsequently rebates that will impact pricing throughout 2013.
Production remains cut back and some propylene availability issues have been prevalent in recent months, leading to a balanced supply situation. Import duties from the Gulf Cooperation Council among others, will increase from 3% to 6.5% on 1 January 2014, but it is not yet clear how this will affect pricing in Europe.
