Updated to Q1 2018
Asia’s acrylonitrile (ACN) supply tightened in Q1 2017, leading Asian spot prices to a new height. Deep-sea cargo availabilities shrank in Q1, on the back of production constraints in the US. Within Asia, supply was squeezed as a couple of regional plants shut down in the January-March period for turnarounds. The supply situation within China for the quarter was however, a little more mixed. At the beginning of the quarter, domestic supply situation was tight as Shanghai SECCO operated its units, with a total capacity of 520,000 tonnes/year, at a lower rate for several weeks in a row, due to a technical reason. However, towards the end of the quarter, operations at SECCO recovered fully, and coupled with high operating rates at several other major Chinese ACN plants, domestic supply situation improved markedly. Domestic prices of ACN therefore fluctuated accordingly during the period, rising to year-high level in the middle of the quarter, but slumped towards the end of the quarter when supply situation improved.
On the demand front, buying interest for US dollar-denominated ACN cargoes was active in the beginning of the quarter, especially from China-based users in the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and the acrylamide (AM) sectors. This was at a time when domestic ACN supplies were limited, and users from these two sectors turned to imports to boost ACN intake. However, demand from another key downstream acrylic fibre (AF) sector faltered significantly during the quarter, as margins were squeezed by the steep costs of feedstock ACN. Many AF plants in China cut operating rates in the quarter.
