Updated to Q4 2016
Phthalic anhydride (PA) contracts in the US ended the fourth quarter with a rollover in December, based on the same movement in the November orthoxylene (OX) market. Contract prices for molten PA increased slightly during the quarter from 51.00-56.00 cents/lb to 52.00-57.00 cents/lb, whilst flake PA went from 52.00-59.00 cents/lb to 53.00-60.00 cents/lb. Global PA flake material in the US tightened during the quarter on unexpected production issues in Europe and stronger demand. There were two producer price increases during the quarter. The first was a 3 cents/lb price adder announced by Stepan which took effect on 1 December 2016 for most contracts, and on 1 January 2017 as other contracts allowed. The second was a 2.5 cents/lb price adder announced by Koppers, which was to take effect on 1 January 2017. Additionally, there was a 1 January price adder of 4.0 cents/lb announced for imports of PA to the US from Mexico. PA prices follow OX prices, which is a feedstock.
The phthalic anhydride (PA) report is published on a weekly basis and covers the monthly contract prices for molten and flake material.
It also includes relevant commentary about the PA industry in other global regions.
Our goal at ICIS is to provide an objective assessment of the PA market each week. To do so, we talk to suppliers, buyers, traders and consumers.
The US report provides a niche objective perspective that helps industry leaders to make key business decisions.
