Asia's spot polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices fluctuated and hit a peak of $1,042.50/tonne FOB (free on board) China in mid-February before softening towards the end of the quarter. PET prices tracked feedstock purified terephthalic acid (PTA) closely. Co-feedstock monoethylene glycol (MEG) prices were also volatile, intensifying the sense of uncertainty in the market.
Demand weakened when prices were on an uptrend early in the quarter, but later strengthened when prices eased and inventories were drawn down. Buying activity for bottle-grade PET also picked up ahead of the end-product peak summer demand period.
Some producers resisted making price reductions and said their margins had been squeezed early in the quarter when their costs went up. Several PET plant start-ups in China were also postponed to later in the year from their original Q1 schedule.
ICIS produces a weekly report on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in Asia. The report contains spot price assessments for fibre grade, bottle grade and film grade PET chips.
Asia spot prices for bottle grade chips are quoted on a free-on-board (FOB) basis across five regions – South Korea, China, Taiwan, southeast Asia (SE Asia) and India.
The report also tracks cost & freight (CFR) northeast Asia (NE Asia) India spot prices for fibre grade, as well as prices for film grade chips on a FOB East Asia-basis.
We also provide a round-up of schedules and any unexpected shutdowns to give readers an overview of the supply situation.
Feedstock purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG) prices are an important driver of PET prices, therefore, the report includes feedstock market information and price quotations.
We speak to a cross-section of market players, producers, end users and traders to gather the information for our reports. This is then analysed and checked to eliminate bias and ensure we provide the most accurate information available on the market.
Subscribers find the report useful as it provides them with crucial up-to-date data that helps them stay ahead of the latest developments across PET markets. They use the assessments as an essential aid for their own business financial and pricing discussions.
