Updated to Q3 2018
Q3 supply emerged at levels similar to Q2 but tightened in late August following a disruption at a GCC facility. Supply remained limited until operations at the supplier’s facility resumed to normal in mid-September. The impact of tighter supply on prices was offset by the seasonal lull across the Middle East and the Indian rupee’s depreciation. Supply to the East Med was also curbed as a result, but its impact was tempered by soft demand.
GCC demand was weak through July and August, weighed down by the seasonal lull during the summer holidays that began in early Q3, followed by the Eid ul-Adha break in mid-August. Processors held sufficient stocks going into the quarter and had completed all purchases in end-Q2. Ample inventories and slow movement of finished goods into downstream markets capped resin demand through September as well, despite expectations of a pickup when business resumes after the holidays.
