Polyethylene overview Transcript
Polyethylene or PE is mainly sold as small pellets to converters who then heat it up and form it into films, bottles and other useful shapes.
We cover several grades there’s several grades, low density polyethylene or LDPE, supply in the US is the tightest of all the grades and also commands the highest price premium.
Linear low density or LLDPE is next off the value chain for producers, and then there’s high density polyethylene or HDPE for moulding is typically viewed as the baseline commodity grade.
Packaging is another major use for polyethylene. Polyethylene is also used as an application in injection moulding of household goods and pipe extrusion.
In recent years, buyers have been faced with increasing complexity in the polyethylene market.
Different factors of feedstock costs, supply / demand balances and export pricing have come into play at different times.
Pricing increasingly depends on international markets because of the low cost of US feedstocks. Producers will be able to export whatever material they do not sell in the US.

Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
ICIS has a global network of reporters in Houston, London, Singapore, Shanghai, Mumbai and Moscow, providing unrivalled coverage of established and emerging markets. Our locally based experts report on prices and the factors driving prices in their region, generating a depth of insight that is only possible by developing contacts and building local knowledge.
This local market insight, combined with our expertise in price reporting, enables us to produce independent and unbiased price assessments, relied upon by key market makers for their decision making.
Our petrochemical and chemical pricing information is published in individual reports, dependent on the different regions we cover, for markets such as Polyethylene.
The ICIS African polyethylene (PE) report covers import costs and freight (CFR) prices in northern, southern, eastern and western Africa, as well as domestic free delivered (FD) rand prices in South Africa on a weekly basis.
Information is taken from key industry players, such as producers, buyers, traders and distributors.
The ICIS African PE price report focuses on film grades of low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) but also looks at wider issues and events in the global PE market.
The report provides a benchmark for a number of players, but also gives essential information about the upstream and downstream movements – and offers a global context, helping players make informed decisions.
In the past, African players used a formula based on the ICIS Asian PE report, plus freight, in order to calculate African import prices. But Africa is a diverse continent, with its own supply and demand dynamic, and this method is becoming increasingly outdated.
Currency and freight rate fluctuations also have a large impact on prices.
Consumption in Africa is increasing. Recently, we have seen more producers take steps to build a presence and reputation on the continent, and do more direct business with large consumers, rather than acting through traders.
This ICIS report is essential for those players wanting to stay one step ahead of the game, and offers in-depth analysis of the market and current and future trends. The report brings the most up-to-date news, in terms of pricing movements, consumer demand and changes to supply (such as production updates).
