Insight and analysis of factors driving prices.
During the August-November period, polyethylene (PE) prices in Latin America were mostly up, but prices have weakened slightly in November, although not in all countries.
The effect of currency devaluations on PE prices remained noticeable in Argentina, where the local currency has been steadily losing ground versus the US dollar. The monthly currency exchange adjustments are now daily. That is, the dollar value used in the transaction is set at invoice time.
In Brazil, the local producer has increased prices in July, August and September. Prices had a rollover in October and two grades of PE have been reduced in November. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) prices have remained steady.
Cracker maintenance has had a large impact on Mexico’s supply during September and October, and November supply is still a little short, particularly for high density polyethylene (HDPE). Prices were reduced up to 7% at the end of October and no price changes are expected during November.
Prices have been slightly higher in Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia because those countries have low import tariffs and have received competitive offers from Asia and the Middle East.
Prices were unchanged once again in Venezuela this quarter, and there have been a few incidents of diminished production resulting in shortages of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Imports are filling the gaps, although the timing of the shipments could be improved.
These comments are based on the price behaviour of LDPE, but are also applicable to other grades.
