Hurricane Harvey had a great impact on styrene production in the US Gulf and this caused a price spike for Latin America, too. PS producer Videolar Innova in Brazil had problems to secure styrene that is normally supplied from the US Gulf and this caused PS production to decline. Exports from Brazil were postponed until January, because producers concentrated on their domestic market for better netbacks. Production was normal in other countries, but not in Venezuela, where the only local PS plant has been idled for more than a year.
PS demand typically increases during the spring and summer months with a greater consumption of disposable packaging for food and beverages. This situation applied to South America, which is in its summer months. Demand has been steady to slightly lower in Mexico.
The polystyrene (PS) report for Latin America covers domestic prices for general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) and for high impact polystyrene (HIPS) in several key Latin American markets.
It includes prices for Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina, assessed in the domestic currencies of each country; a unique feature of ICIS reports.
Commentary covers feedstocks, plant outages, policy changes, news, currency fluctuations and more. A table with international prices facilitates import and export comparisons.
ICIS talks to a variety of market participants every week for commentary on the market. ICIS intelligence about upstream and downstream markets completes the picture with logistics, seasonal patterns, historical prices and regional comparisons.
