Updated to Q2 2017
In the second quarter (Q2) of 2017 Polystyrene (PS) markets in Latin America gave back a large part of the gains achieved in the first quarter, when prices rose each month in large steps. The Q1 increases responded to a tight styrene supply situation in the US Gulf that kept prices rising. There were also large increases in benzene and butadiene rubber that had a large impact on polystyrene prices. With normal supply of styrene, PS prices returned to levels that compete better with polypropylene (PP). Demand in Latin America was weak because of tough economic conditions in some countries, coupled to difficult climate conditions in several countries that contributed to depress polymer demand. PS products from Colombia are having a larger participation in other South American countries, forcing local suppliers to compete for market share. With the normalization of raw material prices, PS markets are expected to be flat in the short term.
The polystyrene (PS) report for Latin America covers domestic prices for general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) and for high impact polystyrene (HIPS) in several key Latin American markets.
It includes prices for Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina, assessed in the domestic currencies of each country; a unique feature of ICIS reports.
