Updated to Q3 2021
The production situation at BASF Petronas is to be monitored further. Upcoming turnarounds are expected in China and Indonesia. India’s Bharat Petrochemical Corp Ltd’s new acrylates capacity is also upcoming.
Downstream demand is expected to slow seasonally in summer. The COVID-19 situation is expected to continue to be serious into Q3 in southeast Asia and may still hurt demand. India’s demand is expected to improve. Demand for Asian cargoes from Europe and the US may continue in the short term with tight supply continuing in those regions.
Supply is expected to be mixed. There is no clear date when Dow will lift its force majeure on GAA. In addition, Dow’s Boehlen plant remains idle with no news on when it will return. Supply will ease when the force majeure is lifted. Gazprom is set to enter a two-month long maintenance shutdown, which will reduce the amount of imported material available in the spot market. Imports are expected to remain limited due to the high cost of shipping and limited cargo space on ships.
Demand is expected to remain strong in Q3, with persistent robust buying interest from the adhesives and coatings sector. There may even be a slight uptick in demand from this sector should the warmer summer weather allow for more external coatings. A slight growth in demand is expected for SAP as imports are falling and pressure on European production has increased.
Supply is expected to improve, although market players believe there will be limited availability for small- and mid-sized buyers seeking spot material. Unlike in early April, contract buyers will have the opportunity to buy full allocations from most suppliers as the new quarter begins. Feedstock prices – such as propylene – remain high, increasing the cost of production. Also upstream, oxo-alcohols are more constrained, which will limit how much production can grow.
Demand is expected to remain steady in Q3. Traditionally, peak demand is in the spring/early summer, but market participants expect seasonal consumption to last longer this year due to pent-up demand from the previous sixteen months. This includes expectations of strong demand from the construction sector, which recently experienced some monthly declines in new-home starts due to temporarily rising costs from lumber shortages and a smaller-than-expected labour pool.

The report assesses monthly contract price in euros and reports the range on a free delivered (FD) northwest Europe basis (NWE).
The number is assessed by ICIS through regular contact with key market participants such as major suppliers, distributors and end users.
We also publish a weekly spot range of acrylic acid that is reported on a FD NWE basis.
We determine the general market sentiment and what factors are driving it. This could be dictated by upstream price movements, but demand for the esters and global trade flows will also play their part.
In addition, we cover any relevant production or shipping news that may influence or impact on the market.
This is an unrivalled report in that it looks specifically at acrylic acid and delves into the dynamics of the market rather than simply looking at acrylic acid as a feedstock for the esters.
